HISTORY OF KEUKENHOF
The park history dates back to the 15th century. Keukenhof name derives from Keukenduin which is translated as ‘kitchen dune’. It was an area of dunes near Lisse, which served as fruits and vegetables garden for the Keukenhof castle‘s kitchen. The castle’s garden was redesigned in 1857. In 1949, some flower bulb growers and exporters used the estate to exhibit flowering bulbs. That was the birth of Keukenhof as a spring park. The park was opened to the public in 1950 and attracted from the beginning a lot of tourists.
THEME
In 2019 it is the 70th edition of Keukenhof and the park’s theme is Flower Power.
