The Mekong River is the 12th longest river in the world and the 7th longest river in Asia and it crosses 6 countries: China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Before emptying into the East Vietnam Sea, it forms the Mekong Delta which is Vietnam’s most important region for agriculture and aquaculture.
- the river’s springs are in the Tibetan Plateau;
- it is one of the most polluted rivers in the region (garbage and waste deposit);
- the Mekong Delta lies to the west of Ho Chi Minh City;
- the delta has a very productive soil which is mainly used for rice cultivation;
